Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Paul attended Senn High School.  He lettered in basketball and baseball.

He entered Lake Forest in 1950 and went on to earn four letters in basketball.  His junior year he broke the school scoring record, averaging 16.6 points and 14 rebounds per game.  His final season he broke his own record by averaging 22.2 points and 17.7 rebounds per game.  In both seasons he was voted Most Valuable Player and was selected as an All-Conference player. He finished his Forester career with 950 points and over 800 rebounds. A member of Delta Chi, he was also junior class vice president and was active in intramurals.

Graduating with a political science degree, he entered the Army.  While in the Army, Paul played football, basketball and baseball.  He traveled through the Far East, Europe and the Mediterranean playing basketball on the CISM team.  As the only member of the team from a small school, he was among ten players to be selected to the All Armed Forces Team in 1955.

After he left the Army in 1956, Paul became the regional manager for Continental Casualty Company in Chicago and Indianapolis and then held the same position with Bankers Life and Casualty Company in Chicago and St.Louis.  Paul finished his 31-year insurance career with Reliance Insurance Co., working in Chicago and Philadelphia.  He retired in 1987 and stays active playing golf.
