Robert Martin grew up in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, and attended Bishop Miege High School. He competed on the school's basketball and track teams.
Martin enrolled at Lake Forest College in the fall of 1978. He was immediately the handball team's top player and joined partner Fran Harvey ‘81 to win the United States Handball Association National Collegiate championship in doubles. The Foresters also won the team title that season, as they would in each of Martin's four years on the squad. Martin was voted the team's Most Valuable Player and earned All-America honors again as a sophomore by reaching the national finals in singles. He won the singles title each of the next two years and was named both captain and team MVP as a senior. At the time of his induction, Martin was one of just four men's handball players in the history of the program to earn All-America honors in four different seasons.
While at the College, Martin became the first president of “Brotherhood,” a men's social organization on campus.
After graduating from Lake Forest , Martin worked for 10 years at IBM, where he earned the “Eagle Award,” the company's highest sales recognition. He was later employed for 11 years by Hitachi Data Systems, where he claimed seven district, three regional, and a pair of national Sales Representative of the Year honors.
