Growing up in Whitman, Massachusetts, Stephen attended
Whitman-Hanson High School and participated in football, basketball
and baseball.
Entering Lake Forest in 1968, he went on to earn seven varsity letters, three each in baseball and football and one in basketball. During his collegiate football career, he caught 139 passes, ran for 2,756 yards (19.8 yards per carry), and scored 23 touchdowns and ten two-point conversions for a total of 158 points.
Following his graduation with a biology degree, Stephen entered the National Football League, playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers. A knee injury cut his football career short and initiated his teaching career. While he was playing football he earned a Master's degree in Special Education from Bridgewater State. He taught at the junior high school level and coached football, baseball, basketball, tennis and softball. In 1985 he was named Division II Softball Coach of the Year by the Boston Globe.
Inducted into his high school Hall of Fame, he has also made significant contributions at the Park District in Abington, Massachusetts, instructing at softball camps and providing clinics for youth leagues.
