David Kelly grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, and helped lead the New Trier High School tennis team to a state championship in 1996.

He enrolled at Lake Forest College that fall and was immediately the best tennis player on campus. He played at #1 singles throughout his career and was the Midwest Conference runner-up at that position as a freshman. Kelly captured his first conference title as a sophomore and a year later became just the seventh player in league history to repeat as conference champion at the top spot in the lineup. He also added a title at #2 doubles with classmate Guerin Williams in 1999 and helped lead the Foresters to their first league championship in more than two decades. Kelly was the MWC’s runner-up at #1 singles again in 2000 and finished his career with a program record 51 victories against other teams’ best players. He was 93-37 in singles and doubles play combined and was voted his team’s Most Valuable Player all four years. He served as a team captain as a junior and senior and helped lead Lake Forest to a four-year record of 53-13, including a (then) program record 17 victories against just five losses in 2000. In addition to the Foresters’ 1999 MWC title, the squad posted runner-up finishes at the conference tournament during Kelly’s other three seasons.

Kelly graduated from the College in 2000 with a degree in history. He then went on to a career in sales in the Chicago area.

He and his wife Jenny were married in November of 2006 and they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Celia, on March 12, 2010.
