Growing up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Richard attended Glenbard High School where he was a member of football and track teams. He was captain of the 1933 state championship football team and place third in the shot put at the Illinois State Track Championship.

Entering Lake Forest in 1936, Richard was a four time participant on both the football and baseball teams.  He was a left halfback on the 1938 undefeated, untied team.  He also played third base on the baseball team and was a member of the Letterman's Club and Kappa Sigma fraternity.  After college, Richard continued to play football as a member of the Glen Ellyn Bears, a semi-professional team.

Following graduation, Richard, a economics and education major, was a Lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.  When he returned from the war, he worked at the Spring Grove Lumber Company where he was a general manager.  He and his wife, Harriette '40, were the first husband and wife to be inducted into the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame.
