Growing up in Highland Park, Illinois, Lee attended Deerfield Shields High School.

He entered Lake Forest in 1920 and earned four letters in football, two in baseball and was a member of the track team.  Captain of the football team his junior year, he also served on the Athletic Board and Pan-Hellenic Council.  He was senior class treasurer and was a member of Phi Pi Epsilon and Iron Key. 

Graduating with a degree in business administration, Lee went into advertising with H.O. Swenson Co. in Chicago.  He then became production manager at the Heitman Printing company, which printed the College's Bulletin.  Lee eventually went to work for the County Clerk's Office in Lake County, Illinois and held the position of  Deputy County Clerk.
