Kim Herring is a native of Dover, New Hampshire, and attended The Groton School, where she was a varsity athlete in hockey, soccer, and lacrosse.

Herring enrolled at Lake Forest College in 2008 and led the women’s hockey team with 14 goals that winter. She also earned Honorable Mention All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association status after leading the league and ranking tied-for-13th in the nation in points by a freshman. As a sophomore, Herring helped the 2009-10 Foresters post a 19-3-4 overall record and 11-1-4 mark in league play to capture the first conference title in program history. She led the nation in points per game and was named NCHA Player of the Year and First Team All-American. Herring’s 28 goals and 25 assists that season were school records that have since been broken while her 53 points and nine game-winning goals were still the most by a Forester at the time of her induction. She also matched the NCAA Division III record with six assists in the regular season finale. An injury limited Herring to a total of just 37 appearances during her final two years at the College but she was still an Honorable Mention All-NCHA selection as a senior and became the program’s all-time scoring leader and the first Forester to surpass 100 points. Her 53 career goals, 105 points, 21 power play goals, and 13 game-winners still ranked among the top four in team annals a decade later. The program improved significantly during Herring’s time on campus and she helped lead Lake Forest to a 60-37-10 overall record and 39-26-9 mark in the NCHA during her career.

A successful student as well, Herring was named to the NCHA All-Academic Team her senior year. The communication and English writing major graduated from Lake Forest in 2012 before attending Chicago-Kent College of Law and beginning her career as an attorney.
