Growing up in Glencoe, Illinois, Harold attended New Trier High School where he played football, hockey, tennis and golf.  He was the school champion in singles and doubles tennis.

He entered Lake Forest in 1949 and earned four letters in tennis.  He was captain of the team his junior and senior years.  During his career, he was an All-Conference selection and was ranked number one among conference tennis players.  A speech major, Harold was also a member of the Lettermen's Club.

Following graduation, he married Donna Busch '54.  He accepted a position with Inland Construction Company as assistant to the president.  Harold eventually became executive vice president at Gretalederer Inc., a construction company.
