H. James Field grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended Salisbury School in Connecticut, where he lettered in soccer, hockey, and tennis and was captain of all three teams. As a senior he was selected All-New England in hockey and received the Quail Medal, recognizing him as the most outstanding athlete at Salisbury.

Field entered Lake Forest College in 1967 and went on to earn four varsity letters in hockey and three in both tennis and soccer. He was most successful on the ice, where he finished his career with 25 goals and 43 assists and was a two-time All-American defenseman. The Foresters were 44-32-0 during his four seasons and he captained the squad as a senior. Field was also a captain in soccer and was twice selected to the Michigan-Illinois-Indiana All-Conference Team. Lake Forest was 18-10-4 during his three years. A successful tennis player as well, Jim played at the top spot in the lineup for two seasons.

Following his graduation, Field, a history major, entered the world of politics. He eventually served as the chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Central Committee and worked as a special assistant to President Gerald Ford. He also served as campaign chairman in the Rhode Island gubernatorial race. His professional pursuits included highly successful ventures into the insurance and investment and banking businesses, including serving as Chairman and CEO of Fleet Trust and Investment Company in Florida.
