Growing up in Iron Mountain, Michigan, Faust attended Iron Mountain High School where he played football. 

He entered Lake Forest in 1927 and earned twelve varsity letters, four each in football, basketball and baseball.  Captain of the football team, he was voted Most Valuable Player two consecutive years, was Little All-America and was All Conference.  In basketball he was captain, All-Conference and was selected as player of the year his senior year.   An All-Conference player in baseball, he was drafted by the New York Giants.

Graduating with a degree in history, he began his coaching career.  He coached at Green Bay West High School, Marquette University, Northern Michigan University and served as Athletic Director at Eastern Michigan University and Florida Institute of Technology.  He also became  Commissioner of the Association of Mid-Contintent Universities.  Faust's accomplishments have been recognized by several institutions.  He has been inducted into Northern Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Wisconsin and the U.P. Michigan Halls of Fame.
