David Fee grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and attended St. Rita High School, where he was an all-state soccer player and a kicker on the football team.
Fee entered Lake Forest College in the fall of 1995 and began a four-year career as a Forester football player. After taking over as the team’s kicker and punter as a sophomore, Fee set team records with 14 career field goals and 62 extra points and was the first player in school history to kick three field goals in a game. His 4,592 career punting yards and 35.6 yards per punt also ranked among the top five in team annals. Fee earned First Team All-Midwest Conference honors as a punter twice and once as a running back after establishing another team record with 9.7 yards per carry his senior year. He scored six touchdowns that season and finished his career with 140 points, the third-most in program history at that time.
Fee served as Student Body President as a senior at Lake Forest College and graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in communication.
While he was successful in football, the rugby field is where Fee excelled most. He helped take one of the strongest club sports at the College to new heights during his three years with the program before experiencing an extremely successful career playing for the USA National Rugby Team. Fee finished his six-year (2000-06) career as the second leading try scorer in team history and was one of just a few players to play in both 7’s and 15’s Rugby World Cup. He started all four of United States’ Rugby World Cup matches in 2003, was featured on the back cover of EA Sports 2004 Rugby video game, and was named captain of the 2005 USA 7’s team. Fee remained involved with rugby following his retirement and, at the time of his induction, was the head coach of the Notre Dame 7’s Olympic Program.
