Pat Dunne grew up in Palos Heights, Illinois, and attended Marist High School, where he played football for four years, basketball for two, and baseball for one. He was an all-conference selection in football as a senior.

Dunne entered Lake Forest College in 1999 and served as the Forester football team’s kicker and punter for the next four years. He was the First Team All-Midwest Conference punter after averaging 39.5 yards per attempt as a rookie and also earned Second Team All-MWC honors as a kicker that year after tying single-season school records with six field goals and 31 extra points. He also became the first player in program history with eight extra points in a game and the second to make three field goals in a contest. Dunne was the league’s first team kicker and second team punter as a junior before earning first team honors in both roles his senior year. He shattered the school record with 14 field goals as a senior, including the first 50-yarder in team history, and his career total of 30 was more than twice the previous program best. Dunne, a three-year team captain, also finished his career with school records for career extra points (86) and punting yards (7,517) and ranked third in program history in career points (176) and yards per punt (37.8).

After graduating from the College with a degree in communication, Dunne pursued a professional football career and spent time in the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts organizations. He later became the head football coach at his high school alma mater and led Marist to a pair of Class 8A State Championship Game appearances. After nine seasons at Marist he began a career in sales.
