Growing up in Waukegan, Illinois, Ted attended Waukegan High
School. He participated in baseball for two years and tennis
for three years. He was captain of the tennis team his senior
year.
Entering Lake Forest in 1947, he went on to earn four letters in tennis. Along with being the number one singles player for three years, he was also the member of three CCI Championship teams. In 1950 he was singles champion and his senior year he was captain of the team. A member of Kappa Sigma, he served as vice president of the freshman class, president of the Athletic Board of Control, junior class president and Student Center chairman. He was also a member of the Lettermen's Club and was crowned Junior Prom King.
Graduating with a degree in business administration, Ted worked for Sears Roebuck, then entered the U.S. Navy and served for four years. After an honorable discharge he co-founded Stewart Sandwiches, Inc. in Norfolk, Virginia. He served as CEO for the company until his retirement in 1990. Also during his career, Ted served as the Board of Trustee Chairman for the DePaul Hospital Medical Center, the President of the St. Mary's Infant Home, and was on the Board of Trustees at Lake Forest College. He continued to play competitive amateur tennis at the club and state level until the age of 50 and also served as the commissioner of a "T" Baseball League.
