Growing up in Sycamore, Illinois, Hawley attended Sycamore Community High School where he participated in football, basketball and baseball.

He entered Lake Forest in 1934 and earned four letters in football, four in basketball and four in baseball.  Captain of the baseball team his junior year, he was also voted Most Valuable Palyer.  President of Digamma Alpha Upsilon and the Athletic Board of Control, he also served as sports editor of the Stentor and was a member of Student Council.  His involvement resulted in his election to the Iron Key Society and Who's Who in American Colleges.

Graduating with an economics and history degree, Hawley went to work for U.S. Rubber Co. as a sales representative and eventually went to Uniroyal Inc.  He continued to participate in baseball, playing on a Pony League in his city.
