Growing up in Norridge, Illinois, Carolyn attended Ridgewood High School.  In four years of basketball she was selected Most Improved Player as a sophomore.  In her senior year, was captain, Most Valuable Player, and All-Conference.  She also played four years of softball.  In 1980 she was awarded her high school's honor of Female Athlete of the Year.

She entered Lake Forest in 1980 and participated in basketball three years and softball one year.  As a basketball player Carolyn received the Most Improved Player award as a freshman and was selected captain and Most Valuable Player in both her sophomore and junior years.  She was unable to compete as a senior when she received an internship with IBM.

Graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa as an economics major, Carolyn was the recipient of the H. Murray Herlihy prize in economics and the Senior Athlete Academic award.  She accepted a position with IBM following graduation and was the Area 5 Rookie of the Year in 1986 for the company.
