Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Norman attended South Shore High School.  He participated in basketball and track.  He was a member of the 1947 City Champion basketball team.

Entering Lake Forest in 1949, he earned four varsity letters in basketball. A four-year starter, he captained the team during his senior year.  He was named to the All-Conference team and was Most Valuable Player his senior year.  Norm was also a member of Phi Pi Epsilon and the Lettermen's Club.

Graduating with degree in history, he married his high school sweetheart and went to work for his family's construction company Fred Berglund & Sons, Inc.  He eventually became president of the company, a position he held until his retirement in 1996.
