Growing up in Racine, Wisconsin, Charles attended Washington Park High School and played baseball.

He entered Lake Forest in 1938 and went on to earn three letters in football and four in baseball.  A member of Digamma Alpha Epsilon, he also participated in the Economics Club and the L.F. Club.  Elected to the Iron Key Society, he was also awarded Shield Honors at graduation.

Graduating with an economics and physics degree, he entered the United States Naval Reserve.  He served in the communication office and then as Lieutenant he served in the Pacific.  During his service he attended Harvard for one year to study electronics and communications.  After his service, he worked as a Theatre manager and then became the building superintendent of the continental Plaza Hotel.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Motion Picture Theatres group, as well as staying active playing golf, tennis, riding and swimming.
