Growing up in Chicago, Ed started his college career at the University of Wisconsin Madison.  After one semester, he transferred to Lake Forest College.

Entering in 1924, he participated in basketball, baseball and football.  A double-major in physics and history, Ed was also a member of Phi Delta Theta.

Graduating in 1927, he coached the Lake Forest College chess team.  After receiving his Master's degree from Northwestern, he served five years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  After serving, he worked as an Illinois Bell Executive, while also serving as Director of the U.S. Chess Team Federation, Organizer of the Junior Class Tournament and president of the North Shore Chess League.  For his achievements, he received the Distinguished Service Award and an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Lake Forest College.
