Growing up in New York City, Nick attended Peter Stuyvesant High
School where he played football, basketball and baseball. He
entered Ohio State University in 1934 and went on to earn eight
varsity letters, three in football, two in basketball and three in
baseball. He was also captain of the baseball team his senior
year.
He graduated in 1938 and entered the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served for two years in the Atlantic theater as a Lieutenant. He came to Lake Forest in 1958 and was Athletic Director from 1959 to 1973. He also coached the football and baseball teams and was an assistant professor of physical education. While at the College, he introduced both the ice hockey and soccer programs. He was also instrumental in the construction of the Sports Center and the conversion of the field house to a hockey arena. Voted Teacher of the Year in 1978, he was given Emeritus status upon his retirement.
His civic leadership and accomplishments are just as noteworthy. He has been an advocate for the Developmentally Disabled, serving on the State Advisory Committee for the Mentally Retarded. He was also appointed Chairman of the Mentally Retarded and Developmentally Disabled Committee in Franklin City, Ohio by the Governor. He was president of the Citizens Advisory Board for the Columbus Developmental Center and was treasurer of the Creative Housing Association, a non-profit group that buys and rehabilitates homes for the mentally retarded. The Alumni Association of Ohio State University awarded Nick its highest honor, the Citizenship Award, which recognizes Alumni who have done service beyond the call of duty.
