1975 Soccer Team

The 1975 Lake Forest men’s soccer team was the first in any sport at the College to advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Coached by Ed Packel, the Foresters entered the 1975 season as the defending Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference champions and having won their last five games the previous year. Lake Forest shut out its first two opponents, setting up an important early-season game with visiting Wheaton College, a participant in the 1974 NCAA Tournament. A hard-fought 2-1 overtime victory sent the Foresters into October with a perfect 3-0-0 record and they finished off the non-conference portion of their regular season schedule with two more wins. Among the team’s four MCAC North Division triumphs were a pair of come-from-behind victories as the Foresters earned the right to host the conference championship tournament as the North’s top seed. Lake Forest continued to roll, defeating Cornell College 7-1 and Knox College 5-1 on Farwell Field to claim another league title. The NCAA rewarded the Foresters for their 11 victories in as many games with a bid to the 16-team Division III Tournament.

Although a 2-1 overtime loss to MacMurray College in the first round of the tournament ended Lake Forest’s season and quest for a national title, the accomplishments of the College’s 1975 men’s soccer team were historically significant. Humphrey Mosenge, the team’s Most Valuable Player, was joined by Charlie Peabody, team captain Jeff Miller, and goalkeeper Doug Moorad as First Team All-MCAC North honorees and Dave Weisbecker was an Honorable Mention selection. Mosenge, Miller, and Moorad were also named to the All-Illinois Soccer Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Foresters outscored their opponents 54-10, setting team records for most goals scored and fewest allowed in a season. Their victory total and winning percentage were also program-bests and their 16-game winning streak, which dated back to the 1974 season, was still the longest in program history at the time of their induction.
