This Week in the Forest: Sept. 9-15

A big weekend for women's tennis, football's home opener, men's soccer's trip to California, more non-conference women's soccer games, a couple of golf tournaments, and another volleyball tournament are on the docket this week.

The women's tennis team will begin the week with a home match against Judson University on Wednesday. The Foresters are coming off 9-0 victories at Monmouth College, Illinois College, and Knox College to begin Midwest Conference play last weekend and are now 5-0 overall on the season. Judson is 1-2 after falling 6-2 at Purdue University Northwest on Saturday and will be facing Lake Forest for the first time.

The only home contest before the weekend will be Wednesday's women's soccer game against Concordia University Wisconsin. Lake Forest suffered its first loss of the year on Saturday, a 3-1 decision at Illinois Institute of Technology, before playing to a 1-1 tie at Edgewood College on Sunday. The 3-1-1 Foresters will take on the 2-0-0 Falcons, who are coming off a 2-1 triumph over #17 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse last Tuesday. Lake Forest is 10-7-2 all-time against Concordia Wisconsin but has dropped the last two meetings.

Wednesday's schedule also includes a volleyball match at Carthage College. Lake Forest is 4-4 after winning in three sets at Alverno College but falling in five at Milwaukee School of Engineering and to Wheaton College last weekend. The Foresters are 9-15 all-time against Carthage but have fallen in their last eight matchups with the Lady Reds, who are 7-1 so far this season and were ranked 19th in the nation in last week's poll.

The men's golf team will compete in its third two-day tournament of the season this Friday and Saturday. The Foresters, who finished 17th out of 20 teams at Carthage's Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament last weekend, will travel to Galena, Illinois, for this weekend's Midwest Region Fall Classic. Thirty-two teams attended the event last year, including fifth-place Lake Forest.

The volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, taking on Dominican University (5-2) on day one of Wheaton College's Marilyn Scribner Invite. The Foresters will also face off against North Central College (3-5) and Buena Vista University (1-5) on Saturday. Lake Forest leads the all-time series with North Central 19-18 but is just 2-7 against Dominican and 0-1 against Buena Vista.

Men's soccer will kick off its trip to the west coast at California Lutheran University Friday night. The Foresters are coming off a 2-0 triumph over visiting Illinois Wesleyan University and a 3-0 victory at Concordia University Chicago over the weekend and are now 2-0-1 on the season. A 2-1 win over Concordia-Texas on Sunday improved Cal Lutheran to 1-2-0.

Saturday will be a busy day in Forester Athletics and the most important contests may be the women's tennis team's matches at 1-2 Cornell College and 3-0 Grinnell College. Lake Forest is the defending conference champion and was a narrow selection over Grinnell in the 2019 Preseason Coaches Poll. The Pioneers have claimed 12 of the last 17 league titles and are tied atop the standings this year after matching the Foresters with three league victories last weekend. Lake Forest has taken the last three matchups with Cornell but are just 6-16 all-time against the Rams. A pair of victories over Grinnell last year, including one in the MWC Tournament Final, improved the Foresters record against the Pioneers to 14-30.

Women's golf is coming off a lopsided dual match victory over visiting Benedictine University last Wednesday and will head to Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, for the Marian Invite on Saturday and Sunday. Lake Forest is the defending champion at the event, which included seven teams in 2018.

The Forester football team won its season opener 27-15 at Wisconsin Lutheran College last Thursday night and will host Grinnell in its home opener on Saturday. It will be Heroes Day at Farwell Field and all former and current members of the military, as well as those in police, fire, and other service professions, will receive free admission and be recognized during the game. Lake Forest has defeated the Pioneers in each of their last seven meetings and own a 23-10-1 advantage in the all-time series.

Fans attending the football game are invited to stick around to watch the women's soccer team host Milwaukee School of Engineering. MSOE is 1-2-1 so far this season but owns a 7-5-0 advantage in the all-time series with Lake Forest after taking the last four meetings. Women's soccer will also host Saint Mary's College (Ind.) on Sunday. The Belles, who are 1-1-1 against the Foresters after three games in the 1990s, enter the week at 3-1-0 this year.

The men's soccer team will close out its trip to California with a game at Occidental College on Sunday. After playing to a scoreless tie against Concordia-Texas on Friday, Occidental enters this week at 1-1-1 for the year.
