This Week in the Forest: Feb. 4-10

This Week in the Forest: Feb. 4-10

Seven different sports will be in action this week, including three celebrating Senior Day on Saturday.

The week will begin with Tuesday night's basketball games at Lawrence University, where both Forester teams will be looking for a season sweep of the Vikings. The Lake Forest women are coming off a 87-65 victory over visiting Beloit College on Saturday and are now 10-11 overall and tied-for-third in the Midwest Conference standings at 9-5 in league play. Lawrence enters the week 5-15 overall and 2-12 in the conference after falling 63-51 at Ripon College on Saturday. The Foresters' 62-49 triumph on January 8 was their 23rd in a row against the Vikings.

After defeating Beloit 98-70 on Saturday for its fourth consecutive win, the Lake Forest men's basketball team is 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the MWC, good for third place. Lawrence fell 84-73 at Ripon on Saturday and is now 10-11 overall and tied-for-fifth in the conference with a league record of 7-7. The Foresters defeated the Vikings 85-63 on January 8 and are looking to sweep the season series for the third year in a row.

The Lake Forest handball team, which has competed in informal invitational events at home the last two weeks, will travel to Indianapolis this weekend for the Circle City Tournament. The Foresters have historically fared very well at the event, winning well over half of the Open Singles and Open Doubles titles over the last decade. Play will begin at the Jordan YMCA on Friday and continue through Sunday.

The Forester women's hockey team is unbeaten in its last six games with four shutouts in that span. Lake Forest blanked Northland College 3-0 and 1-0 on the road last weekend to improve to 12-4-5 overall and remain tied for second place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings at 9-1-4 in the league. The team will travel to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, for games this Friday and Saturday at Marian University (5-13-3, 4-8-2 NCHA). The Sabres are coming off a split with visiting Aurora University last weekend and looking to end a 14-game losing streak against the Foresters.

The end of the regular season is almost here for the Lake Forest men's hockey team, which will play its annual home-and-home series with Aurora University this weekend and can clinch home ice for the quarterfinals of the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs with a win or tie in either contest. The Foresters dropped games at Adrian College and Trine University last weekend and fell to 10-8-5 overall and 8-5-3 in the league this year. Lake Forest's 4-0 victory over the Spartans (11-12-0, 8-8-0 NCHA) on December 7 extended the team's unbeaten streak against them to seven games. Friday night's game will be played in Aurora and Saturday's in Alumni Memorial Field House, where Forester seniors Luke Meade, Andrew Behshid, Drew Cleereman, Cody Guidorzi, Quinton Wunder, Bron Loiselle, John Nugent, Vito Aluia, Ryan Kruss, Louis-Philippe De Coucy, and George Argiropoulos will be honored before their final regular season home game.

Saturday will also be Senior Day for Forester basketball players Hannah Hiland, Hannah O'Day, Tiffany Stiewe, Jordan Moran, Danny Sotos, and Chad Bauchan. The women will be looking to avenge a 77-75 loss at Illinois College on January 25 and snap a five-game losing streak to the Lady Blues, who enter the week 9-12 overall and 5-9 in the conference. The Lake Forest men are looking to sweep the Blueboys (6-15, 4-10 MWC) for the second year in a row after prevailing 105-92 on January 25.

Three different runners for the Forester track team have won races in as many meets and a pair of program records have already fallen this season. The team will look to continue its success at Saturday's UW-Platteville Invitational, a meet Lake Forest did not attend in 2018, the first indoor track season in school history.

Also competing on Saturday is the Forester men's tennis team, which opened the 2019 schedule with a 6-3 loss to visiting Elmhurst College last Saturday. Lake Forest will host North Central College, another member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff. The teams have not faced off since the Foresters defeated the Cardinals 9-0 four years ago.
