This Week in the Forest: Jan. 28-Feb. 3

This week includes an important basketball doubleheader on Wednesday, a showdown in the NCHA South on Friday, and nine different contests on Saturday.

Both Forester basketball teams are in contention for spot in their respective four-team Midwest Conference Tournaments and their chances of qualifying for the event would improve significantly with victories at Ripon College on Wednesday. The Lake Forest women will be looking to rebound from two losses on the road last weekend that left them 9-10 overall and 8-4 in the league. Ripon enters the week 11-8 overall and 10-2 in the MWC after splitting a pair of games last weekend. The Foresters and Red Hawks split the 2017-18 regular season series and Lake Forest came out on top 78-75 when they faced off at Ripon in the MWC Tournament.

The Forester men's basketball team prevailed at Illinois College Friday night and Knox College on Saturday to improve to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the conference. Ripon fell twice over the weekend and is now 11-8 overall and 7-5 in MWC play. Neither team has swept multiple meetings in a season since 2011-12 with both of last year's games going to the team playing at home.

The Lake Forest hockey teams will be in action away from Alumni Memorial Field House on Friday, the women in northern Wisconsin and the men in Michigan. The women are coming off a 2-0 victory on Friday and a 2-2 tie on Saturday against Adrian College, which entered the weekend as the fourth-ranked team in the country and perfect in NCHA play. Lake Forest is now 10-4-5 overall this season and tied for second place in the conference at 7-1-4 in league games. The team will play a series at Northland College (6-12-1, 5-6-1 NCHA) on Friday and Saturday. The Foresters have swept weekend series with the Lumberjills each of the last two seasons.

The men's hockey team team skated to a 2-2 tie at Milwaukee School of Engineering last Friday before have its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped by a 2-1 overtime loss to Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday. The Foresters are 10-6-5 overall and their 8-3-3 mark in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play has them tied with Adrian (14-6-1, 9-6-1 NCHA), the 10th-ranked team in the country and their opponent Friday night, atop the league's South Division standings. Lake Forest shut out the Bulldogs 6-0 at home when they met on January 11.

Saturday's schedule begins with the handball team's Men's and Women's Doubles Invitational. Its the third and final part of the program's series of informal events featuring alumni and other local players. The Men's Invitational Singles was played on January 12 and the Women's Invitational Singles last Saturday.

Last Saturday the swimming and diving team competed at home for the final time this season, doubling up the Illinois Institute of Technology women 142-71 and men 146-73. The Foresters will be splitting up this Saturday, with the swimmers competing in a dual meet at St. Norbert College and the divers heading to Chicago for the UIC Diving Invitational.

The Forester distance track team ran at Carthage College's Tadd Metzger Invitational last Friday, where they were led by Yaneli Guajardo's victory in the 800m run. Lake Forest will travel north on Saturday to compete in the Ripon College Invitational. The Foresters finished first in three events in the same meet a year ago.

The basketball team's will be looking to complete season sweeps of visiting Beloit College on Saturday. The Forester women prevailed 75-66 and the men won 100-82 when they met in Beloit a month earlier. The Buccaneer women enter this week 4-15 overall and 3-9 in the league while the men are 6-13 overall and 4-8 in the MWC.

After playing in Michigan on Friday, the Lake Forest men's hockey team will head south to Indiana to take on Trine University 24 hours later. The Foresters posted a 4-1 victory in their first meeting of the season with the Thunder, who enter the week 8-11-2 overall and 4-9-1 in the NCHA.

The start of February marks the beginning of the 2019 Forester men's tennis season and the team will open with a match against visiting Elmhurst College Saturday night at Lake Bluff Racquet Club. Lake Forest, which finished 2018 with a record of 14-8, swept the Bluejays 9-0 in the 2018 season opener.
