This Week in the Forest: Jan.14-20

This Week in the Forest: Jan.14-20

The Forester men's and women's basketball, swimming and diving, track, hockey, and handball teams will all be in action this week.

The week will begin with basketball traveling to St. Norbert College on Wednesday. The women will play first and the Foresters, who are 8-7 overall and tied for first in the Midwest Conference standings at 7-1 in league play, will look for their fifth consecutive victory and a season sweep of the Green Knights. St. Norbert posted a pair of victories last week and are now 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Foresters came out on top 78-68 when the teams met earlier this season in Lake Forest and they split the 2017-18 season series with each prevailing on the other's home court.

Two of the top three men's basketball teams in the conference will meet when the Lake Forest visits St. Norbert on Wednesday. The Foresters and Green Knights and both 10-5 overall this season and riding four-game winning streaks. St. Norbert is undefeated in eight MWC contests while Lake Forest is tied-for-second in the standings at 6-2 in league play and looking to avenge a loss in the teams' first meeting this season. The Knights swept the season series a year ago after the Foresters came out on top when they met in the 2017 MWC Tournament.

The Forester handball teams will experience their first tournament action of the new year this weekend at the Illinois handball Association State Singles Tournament in Des Plaines. Competition will begin on Friday and conclude on Sunday. Sophomore Anthony Sullivan is the team's top returning player from last year's event, having advanced to the quarterfinals in the Men's Open Division.

Lake Forest will begin their second year of indoor track at Friday's UW-Oshkosh Titan Twilight Invitational. The meet will be the first of five leading up to the MWC Indoor Championships February 22-23. It will also be the Foresters' first trip to Oshkosh's Kolf Sports Center.

This weekend will be the second in a row at home for both Forester hockey teams. The women split a non-conference series with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire last weekend, taking Friday night's game 3-1 before falling to the 10th-ranked team in the nation 2-1 on Saturday. Lake Forest enters this weekend 8-4-3 overall and in second place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings at 5-1-2 in league play. The team will host St. Norbert (3-10-1, 3-4-1 NCHA) Friday and Saturday afternoon looking to extend its seven-game winning streak against the Green Knights. Saturday is Alumni Day and the annual Ry McCarthy Award will be presented between the first and second periods of the game.

The Forester men just had their most successful weekend of the season, blanking seventh-ranked Adrian College 6-0 on Friday to climb into first place in the NCHA South Division standings and staying there with a 4-1 triumph over Trine University on Saturday. Lake Forest is 8-5-4 overall and 6-2-2 in the NCHA and will host Marian University, which is tied for first place in the North Division, Friday night. After a three-point weekend the Sabres are 8-6-3 overall and 6-3-1 and defeated the Foresters 2-1 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, earlier this season. Lake Forest rebounded from that loss with an 8-1 victory the next night at Lawrence University, the team's opponent this Saturday. The Vikings will enter the weekend 4-12-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the conference.

Lake Forest's swimmers competed in the Illinos-Michigan Quadrangular at Wheaton College last Saturday and won four events while finishing fourth in both the men's and women's team standings. The Foresters will travel to Lawrence this Saturday for a double-dual that also includes the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The same three teams competed in the same format a year ago at Whitewater, where the Lake Forest men and women defeated the Vikings but fell to the hosts.

UPDATE: Saturday's basketball games mentioned below have been moved to Sunday.

Both basketball teams will be back in action at home against Monmouth College on Saturday. The women's game will feature two of the three teams who enter the week 7-1 in the conference with the 12-3 Fighting Scots responsible for the Foresters' lone defeat in the league on December 12. Lake Forest had taken the previous seven meetings between the two programs. The men's game went the other way earlier this season as the Foresters defeated the Scots 70-64, ending a run of four meetings in which the team playing at home prevailed. Monmouth, the defending conference champion, enters the week 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the league.
