This Week in the Forest: Nov. 12-18

The season-opening Joe Ardito Contenders Handball Tournament is the only sporting event here at the College this week.

This year's edition of the longest-running tournament in Illinois Handball Association history will take place Friday and Saturday in the Sports and Recreation Center. In addition to hosting the annual event, Lake Forest College has also produced the winner of the tournament 18 of the last 22 years.

The Forester men's basketball team started its 2018-19 season with a 74-65 victory over visiting Carthage College on Friday and will play its first road game of the year Tuesday night at North Park University. The Vikings have taken the last two meetings between the two programs, including a 64-59 decision a year ago, and are 21-10 all-time against Lake Forest.

The women's basketball team will also be on the road this week at the Loras Tip-Off Classic in Dubuque, Iowa. Lake Forest was defeated 85-63 by visiting University of Chicago, the seventh-ranked team in the nation, in last Thursday's season opener. The Foresters won their only previous game against Edgewood College, their opponent on Friday, but that game was played in 2005. Lake Forest is also 2-0 all-time against Saturday's foe Loras with the last meeting in 2010.

The Forester women's hockey team posted a pair of ties against Aurora University at home last weekend and are now 2-2-2 overall and 2-0-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play on the year. Lake Forest will play at Finlandia University (0-5-0, 0-4-0 NCHA) this Friday and Saturday looking to continue finding success against the Lions. The Foresters are 32-3-0 all-time with a 29-game winning streak against Finlandia.

The Lake Forest swimming and diving teams will compete twice this weekend, first at Lawrence University's Gene Davis Invitational on Saturday. The Forester men won last year's event while the women finished fourth out of six teams. Lake Forest, which is coming off a win on the men's side and a runner-up performance by the women at the four-team Monmouth Invite last Saturday, will also travel to the University of Chicago for the final day of the Phoenix Fall Classic on Sunday.

The fall sports season received a one-week extension last Saturday when senior Jorge Villanueva finished 29th at the Midwest Regional and advanced to this Saturday's NCAA Division III Championship Meet at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin. He is the first runner in program history to qualify for the Division III Championships.
