This Week in the Forest: Oct. 22-28

Lake Forest will host the 2018 Midwest Conference Cross Country Championship Meet this Saturday.

Foss Park Golf Course in nearby North Chicago will be the site of the first conference meet hosted by Lake Forest since 2003. The Forester men placed third and the women fifth at last year's competition and five members of the program, including current senior Jorge Villanueva, junior Philip Wilson, and sophomore Yaneli Guajardo, were named All-MWC after finishing in the top 20 in their respective race. The Cornell College men and St. Norbert College women will be looking to defend their team titles and the men's individual champion is also back.

Fans will not have to wait until Saturday to cheer on a Forester team, however, as men's soccer will start the week against visiting Beloit College on Tuesday. Lake Forest prevailed 5-1 at Illinois College on Saturday to improve to 8-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in league play. Beloit enters the week 4-11-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the league. The Foresters have won the last five meetings between the two teams, including a 2-1 decision at home a year ago, and are 39-16-1 all-time against the Buccaneers. Lake Forest will then close out the regular season against Lawrence University (3-13-0, 1-7-0 MWC) at home on Saturday. The Foresters defeated the Vikings each of the last three years and own a 35-13-4 advantage in the all-time series.

The volleyball team will also be in action against Beloit on Tuesday. Lake Forest dropped a pair of conference matches on the road last weekend and are now 10-15 overall and 3-4 in the league. The Buccaneers are 8-14 overall and 2-4 in the MWC. The Foresters own a 38-17 advantage in the all-time series but fell in four sets at Beloit last year. Lake Forest will close out the season against Ripon College (9-16, 3-4 MWC) at home Friday night. The Foresters defeated the Red Hawks in four sets in 2017 and are 32-14 against them all-time.

While one sport finishes up Friday night, two others begin. The Forester men's hockey team will play at the University on Wisconsin-Superior on Friday and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday while the women face off at the University of St. Thomas, the 10th-ranked team in the country, both days. The Lake Forest men posted a 15-11-2 overall record in 2017-18 and split against the same two teams they will take on this weekend, defeating Superior 4-2 in the opener and falling 3-2 in overtime to Eau Claire the next night. The women were 20-9-0 a year ago and will be looking to avenge a pair of one-goal losses to the Tommies.

Forester swimming and diving will also start the 2018-19 season this weekend. Lake Forest will travel just north of the state line to take on Carthage College in a dual meet on Saturday. The Forester women were 3-3 and the men 2-4 in dual meets last year and each squad suffered a loss to Carthage. Lake Forest's men's and women's rosters each include six freshmen soon to make their collegiate debuts.

The Forester football team will be traveling to Monmouth College on Saturday. Lake Forest enters the week 5-2 overall and having started MWC South Division play with three consecutive shutouts, including last Saturday's 24-0 triumph at Grinnell College. Monmouth is also 3-0 in the division and is the two-time defending league champion with a 25-game regular season conference winning streak, which dates back to the 2014 season. The Foresters are looking to end a four-game losing streak against the Fighting Scots and improve on a record of 19-30-2 in the all-time series.

Women's soccer has also won its last three games in shutout fashion, including Saturday's 2-0 victory at Illinois College that improved the team's overall record to 7-9-0 and league mark to 3-4-0. The Foresters will host Lawrence (0-17-0, 0-8-0 MWC) on Saturday before finishing the regular season at St. Norbert College (6-9-0, 5-2-0 MWC) on Sunday. A 7-0 victory a year ago was Lake Forest's seventh in a row over the Vikings a year ago and the all-time series is 35-6-1 in the Foresters' favor. Lake Forest is 16-28-6 all-time against the Green Knights after a 2-2 tie last season.
