This Week in the Forest: Sept. 24-30

The Forester volleyball team will play three matches this week, including its Midwest Conference opener.

Lake Forest hosts Trinity International University Tuesday night looking to avenge last year's four-set loss in Deerfield, Illinois. The home team having won each of the last four meetings bodes well for the Foresters, who enter the week 6-9 after defeating Alverno College and host Concordia University Chicago on Saturday. Trinity International is 11-6. The Foresters will also travel to Wheaton College on Wednesday looking to end a long losing streak to the Thunder, who are 9-5. Conference play in the MWC begins on Saturday and Lake Forest will play at Knox College (4-9). Lake Forest defeated the Prairie Fire in four sets a year ago.

The Forester men's soccer team will also be in action at home on Tuesday, taking on Hope College. Lake Forest won its league opener 4-0 over visiting Ripon College 4-0 on Sunday and improved to 5-3-1 overall this season. Hope (7-0-0), the 23rd-ranked team in the nation, came out on top of a 1-0 decision against Lake Forest in the 2017 season opener. Tuesday's contest will be the final non-conference game of the regular season for the Foresters, who will resume league play this weekend at Grinnell College (4-3-0, 1-0-0 MWC) on Saturday and Cornell College (7-0-2, 0-0-1 MWC) on Sunday. Lake Forest will be looking to repeat last year's back-to-back victories in Iowa.

The women's soccer team will also travel to Grinnell and Cornell this weekend. Lake Forest dropped a 2-0 decision to Ripon on Sunday and is now 4-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the conference. Last year the Foresters doubled up Cornell 4-2 but fell 2-1 to Grinnell on the road. Both opponents began their league schedule on Saturday with a victory, evening Grinnell's overall record at 3-3-1 and raising Cornell's to 2-6-1.

After finishing sixth out of 11 teams at last weekend's Wisconsin Lutheran College Fall Invitational, the Lake Forest men's golf team will play in a pair of events this week, beginning with Thursday's Elmhurst Fall Invitational. The team will also travel south to compete in the two-day Millikin Fall Tournament, which will begin on Sunday. The Foresters have not played in either event in past years.

Women's golf also had a sixth-place showing over the weekend at the UW-Whitewater Fall Classic. Lake Forest will travel to Rockford, Illinois, for this Sunday's Aldeen Preview, which will include several league schools getting some experience at Aldeen Golf Club, the annual site of the MWC Championship Tournament. The Foresters were second at the event a year ago.

The Forester football team posted a dramatic 35-34 come-from-behind victory over Lawrence University on Saturday. The team will play on the road for the first time in 2018 this Saturday at Macalester College in a battle between a pair of 2-1 squads. Lake Forest defeated the Scots 41-26 when the teams met in 2017.

The only event in the fall for the Forester men's tennis team is this weekend's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament. Lake Forest will travel to St. Louis, Missouri, for the event, which will begin on Friday and last throughout the weekend.
