This Week in the Forest: August 27-September 2

Four Forester teams will begin 2018-19 on Friday and four more on Saturday.

The first Lake Forest team to compete will be women's golf in Friday's opening round of the two-day Carthage College Shootout on the Border, which is played at Bristol Oaks Country Club in Bristol, Wisconsin. The Foresters posted the third-best 36-hole score in program history at last year's event and tied for sixth place in the 17-team field.

The volleyball team will also compete on Friday and Saturday in the annual Forester Invitational. Coming off a 12-14 season, Lake Forest takes on St. John Fisher College (22-9) and Loras College (12-15) on Friday before closing out the weekend against Carroll University (11-21) and Manchester University (11-12) on Saturday. The Foresters split their four matches at last year's event with a four-set victory over Manchester in the opener.

The Forester men's soccer team will also open 2018 at home on Friday. Lake Forest was 12-7-1 last season and will host Concordia University Chicago (3-13-0) in the first meeting between the two programs since 2012. The Foresters have won all eight of their previous games against the Cougars but have never faced off against Westminster College, their opponent in another home game on Sunday. The Bluejays posted an 8-10-2 record a year ago.

Lake Forest's women's soccer team will play twice over the weekend as well, but both games will be in Indiana. The Foresters, who were 7-8-2 last season, will visit Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (7-9-2) Friday night and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (3-8-1) the following afternoon. It will be the first meeting in team history with both opponents.

The Foresters' season-opening competitions on Saturday include the cross country team's appearance at St. Norbert College's Tom Barry Invitational in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Lake Forest men won the meet while the women were fifth in 2017, the sixth straight year they began with that event.

Women's tennis, which finished with a program record 23 vicories against just three losses a year ago, will open 2018-19 on Saturday at the Town Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Foresters  will take on Loras College (11-6) for the first time in more than two decades and play their first match against Milwaukee School of Engineering (11-10), the host of the four-team event.

The final sport to make its debut this weekend is football, which is coming off back-to-back 8-2 seasons. Lake Forest will host Wisconsin Lutheran College, a 3-7 team in 2017, on Heroes Day. It will be the third time the two teams have met in a season opener with the Foresters taking the 2014 meeting 20-14 and the Warriors winning 38-37 in overtime the following year.
