This Week in the Forest: February 26-March 4

Spots in the NCAA Division III Championships will be on the line for the women's hockey team and a pair of divers this weekend.

The Forester women's hockey team is riding a 10-game winning streak, including last weekend's 4-0 and 8-0 shutouts of visiting St. Norbert College in the quarterfinals of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Payoffs last weekend. Lake Forest will take its 19-8-0 record to Adrian College this weekend and face off against College of St. Scholastica (16-6-5) Friday night in a semifinal game. The winner will advance to Saturday night's Slaats Cup Championship Game against Adrian (21-5-1). The Foresters swept a weekend series against St. Scholastica at home February 16-17 but dropped a pair of games at Adrian in January. The tournament champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

No stranger to national competition, Forester junior and two-time Midwest Conference Men's Diver of the Year Heath Ogawa will compete in the NCAA Division III Region 1 Meet at the University of Chicago this Friday and Saturday. Ogawa advanced to the national meet each of his first two years and has been named All-American once with three Honorable Mention All-American performances in his career. He will be joined at the regional meet by Lake Forest sophomore Lizzie Johns, who qualified for the competition with her winning performance off the 1-meter board at the MWC Championships on February 17.

After competing in the program's first MWC Championship Meet last weekend, the Forester track team will make the short trip to Carthage College on Friday for the Gill Athletics Final Qualifier. Six Forester distance runners earned points at the conference meet and they will look to improve on those performances on Friday. It will be the team's final indoor meet of the season.

The Lake Forest men's tennis team split a pair of matches in Racine, Wisconsin, last Saturday, falling 5-4 to Millikin University before sweeping Illinois Wesleyan University 6-0. The Foresters are now 4-3 on the season and will play their final match before Spring Break this Saturday evening against Calvin College at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff. The Knights, who edged out the Foresters 5-4 in last year's meeting, enter the week 1-2.

The Forester women's team will also be in action this weekend. After posting a 14-1 record in the fall, its first two matches of the spring semester will be played Saturday at Principia College, where Lake Forest will take on the hosts in the morning and Greenville College in the afternoon. Lake Forest has never faced Greenville has split a pair of 5-4 decisions in the last three years against Principia.

The only Forester team that has yet to compete in 2017-18 is softball, which will open the season indoors this weekend at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Tournament at the Rochester Regional Stadium and Bubble in Rochester, Minnesota. Lake Forest, which is coming off a 22-16 season, will face St. Olaf College and Buena Vista University on Saturday before taking on host Luther College and the University of Dubuque on Sunday.
