This Week in the Forest: Jan. 22-28

The six seniors on the Forester swimming and diving teams will compete at home for the final time on Saturday.

Lake Forest will host the swimming and diving teams from the University of Chicago in a dual meet Saturday afternoon. The Forester men and women are both 2-2 and split a double-dual event at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater last Saturday, defeating Lawrence University but falling to the hosts. The Maroon men are 2-5 and the women 4-4 so far this year. The teams have not faced off in a dual meet format since November of 2008. Forester seniors David Bunting, Toni Corbani, Brigit Dunne, Matt Demirs, Landon Longfield, and Lily McCarthy will be honored before the contest.

While this week's competition in the pool will wait until Saturday the Lake Forest basketball teams will be in action Wednesday evening at Illinois College. The men will play first with the Foresters looking to rebound from Saturday's 76-69 loss at Monmouth College that dropped the team's overall record to 11-6 and Midwest Conference mark to 7-3. The Blueboys enter the week 7-10 overall and 2-8 in the league. The Foresters prevailed 79-62 when the teams met in Lake Forest on December 6. Lake Forest will also host Knox College (3-14, 1-9 MWC) on Saturday looking to sweep that season series as well.

The Forester women's basketball team posted a 74-70 victory at Monmouth on Saturday and is now 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the conference. A victory on Wednesday would earn the squad a split with the Lady Blues (4-12, 3-5 MWC), who came out on top in Lake Forest last month. On Saturday the Foresters will also be looking to avenge their loss two weeks earlier to Knox (11-5, 6-2 MWC).

After a pair of weekends on the road, both Lake Forest hockey teams will be hosting games in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday. The women are coming off a pair of losses at #4 Adrian College last weekend and are now 9-8-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. They will take on Marian University, which owns an overall record of 4-13-0 and NCHA mark of 3-7-0 so far this year. The teams will play again Saturday afternoon and one Forester will receive the Ry McCarthy Award between the first two periods.

The Forester men's hockey team won 1-0 at Marian and 6-1 at Lawrence University last weekend to improve to 11-8-0 overall and take over sole possession of second place in the NCHA standings with a league mark of 8-4-0. Lake Forest will host Milwaukee School of Engineering (9-9-1, 5-7-0 NCHA) Friday night before traveling to Concordia University Wisconsin (11-6-2, 7-5-0 NCHA) on Saturday. The Foresters blanked MSOE 5-0 but fell 3-2 to visiting Concordia Wisconsin when the teams faced off earlier this year.

In addition to two basketball games, a hockey game, and a swimming and diving meet, Lake Forest will also host its annual Men's Invitational Singles handball event on Saturday with several alumni and other players from the area expected to be in attendance. The Foresters are coming off a solid showing at last weekend's Illinois Handball Association Singles Championships, where senior Leo Canales was the runner-up on the men's side and Kyra Vidas a semifinalist in the women's competition.

After racing for the first time since 1973 last weekend, Lake Forest's track team will be in action again at the Mike Lints Open at Grand Valley State University. on Saturday The Foresters' performance at Last Saturdays Olivet Nazarene University's NAIA vs. NCAA Challenge, the program's first meet since being added to the College's slate of varsity sports, was highlighted by a victory in the women's 800-meter run by Yaneli Guajardo.

While no Forester teams will compete on Sunday, you will likely find the majority of Lake Forest's student-athletes gathered together to cheer on the action in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse when the College and the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) hosts the annual "The Sleds are Coming" event. Sled hockey players from various age groups will show off their skills on the ice and there will be raffle prizes, silent auction items, and other activities for fan enjoyment and participation. Lake Forest recently received an award for the event from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) and more information can be found here.
