This Week in the Forest: Nov. 13-19

This Week in the Forest: Nov. 13-19

With their leading scorers back, the Forester basketball teams open the season at home on Wednesday.

After finishing 14-11 overall (11-7 MWC) and reaching the championship game of the Midwest Conference Tournament in 2016-17, the Lake Forest men's basketball team will begin this year against visiting Loras College. The Duhawks were 18-8 overall last season and claimed the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with an 11-5 mark in league play. Wednesday's contest will be the first between the two programs since they split a pair of games during the mid-1990s.

The Forester women's basketball team will be taking on a more familiar foe on Wednesday in the University of Chicago. Lake Forest is coming off a 6-17 season (5-13 MWC) and will be taking on a Maroon team that was 19-8 overall, 11-3 in the United Athletic Association, and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament last year. Chicago holds a 17-12 edge in the all-time series between the two programs and defeated Lake Forest when they last met in the 2015-16 season opener.

Both basketball teams will also compete on the road this weekend. The men will compete at the Carthage Classic, where they will take on Great Lakes Christian College on Friday and either Rockford University or the hosts on Saturday. The women will travel to Wheaton College for the Beth Baker Classic and will face Wheaton on Friday and North Central College on Saturday.

The Forester women's hockey team rolled to a pair of lopsided victories at Aurora last weekend, taking Saturday's series opener 13-2 and Sunday's game two 10-0. The team is now 3-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play this season. Lake Forest will host Finlandia University (1-3-1, 1-2-1 NCHA) this Friday and Saturday looking to extend its 25-game winning streak against the Lions that spans more than a decade. Forester fans are encouraged to wear white on Friday as they cheer on the home team.

The Lake Forest men's hockey team also won twice last weekend defeating visiting Marian University 3-1 Friday night and Lawrence University 6-1 on Saturday. The Foresters are now 4-2-0 overall on the season and 3-1-0 in NCHA play. They will play a non-conference game against Aurora University (0-4-2, 0-3-1 NCHA) this Saturday at Johnny's Icehouse West, the training facility of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Foresters have won five of their six meetings with the Spartans, including the last three.

The Forester women's swimmers came out on top at the four-team Monmouth Invite last Saturday while the Lake Forest men placed second. They combined to win 10 of 20 events at the meet, including three of the four relays. Both teams are 1-1 in dual meets this season and will travel to Appleton, Wisconsin, for Lawrence University's Gene Davis Invitational this Saturday. The teams will also compete in the final day of the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic on Sunday.

The middle of November marks the beginning of the handball season and the College will host the annual IHA Joe Ardito Contenders Tournament this weekend. The two-day event, which has been won by a Forester 18 of the last 21 years, will begin on Friday.
