The Midwest Conference South Division lead will be on the line Saturday when the Foresters host Monmouth College. The cross country teams will compete at their conference meet while the regular season will come to an end for three fall sports just as three winter sports get started.
After a record-setting 70-6 victory over Grinnell College on Saturday, the Lake Forest College football team is 7-0 for the first time since 1938. Monmouth is currently 6-1 overall and tied with the Foresters for first place in the MWC South with a 3-0 divisional record. Saturday's winner will be alone in first place with a week to go in the regular season. The stakes are also high in the MWC North, where St. Norbert College will travel to Macalester College for a battle between that division's 3-0 teams. The regular season will end on November 4 and the South champion will host the North's first-place team for the overall league title on November 11 (all six MWC South members will host the teams from the North that finished in the same place in the standings). Forester fans are encouraged to wear black as they come out to cheer on their team.
The Forester cross country teams were off this past weekend in preparation for this Saturday's MWC Championships, which will be hosted by Illinois College. The Lake Forest women finished fourth and the men fifth in the league a year ago, marking the third consecutive season both squads placed in the top half of the standings. The women were listed fourth and the men tied-for-fourth in the MWC Preseason Coaches Poll and will look to match or even out-perform those predictions.
The Forester men's soccer team is also pursuing a conference title but will need some help from the other contenders in the league. Lake Forest prevailed 4-0 at Illinois College on Saturday to improve to 9-5-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the league. The team will host Knox College (12-2-3, 7-0-0 MWC) on Monday needing a victory by at least two goals, a win at Ripon College (2-13-2, 0-7-1 MWC) on Saturday, and a Knox victory at St. Norbert College on Saturday to secure its fourth championship in the last six years.
While regular season titles are out of reach for the Forester volleyball and women's soccer teams, they have not yet been eliminated from qualifying for their respective four-team MWC Tornaments. The volleyball team remained in contention and improved to 11-13 overall and 3-4 in the league by defeating visiting Illinois College in three sets and Monmouth College in five over the weekend. Lake Forest will play at Beloit College (7-15, 2-5 MWC) Tuesday night and at Ripon College (10-15, 5-3 MWC) on Friday. The Foresters need a victory in three or four sets at Ripon and a loss for Grinnell College at Monmouth College on Friday to earn a spot in the postseason.
The Lake Forest women's soccer team kept its MWC Tournament hopes alive on Saturday by pulling out a 1-0 triumph at Illinois College. The Foresters are now 6-8-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the league and will need another win at Ripon College (9-6-0, 3-4-0 MWC) on Saturday and Grinnell to earn no more than one point in its final two contests combined to make the tournament.
The Forester hockey teams will begin their 2017-18 campaigns at home this weekend, beginning with Friday night's men's game against the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Lake Forest finished 16-10-0 overall and 12-8-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association last season. The Foresters, who graduated just three of the top 11 scorers from a year ago, will start the year against a Yellowjacket squad that was 8-19-2 overall in 2016-17. Lake Forest will also host the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, who was 18-7-3 last year, Saturday afternoon.
The women's hockey team won a program record 21 games against six losses and a tie overall last year and finished second in the NCHA standings with a league mark of 14-3-1. The Foresters will start this season Saturday night against the University of St. Thomas, which was 14-11-4 a year ago and finished the year ranked eighth in the nation, just one spot ahead of Lake Forest. The teams will face off again Sunday afternoon.
The Forester swimming and diving teams will also be starting their season on Saturday when Carthage College comes to town. Lake Forest will have a new look as 14 of the 30 members of the mens and women's teams combined are new to the program.
