This Week in the Forest: Oct. 2-8

The Midwest Conference Women's Golf Championships and Homecoming football game highlight the first full week of October in Forester Athletics.

Women's golf became a varsity sport at the College in 2014 and the Foresters finished fifth at the MWC Championships that fall. The team climbed a spot in the standings to fourth the following season and moved up one more position to third last year. Lake Forest was the runner-up at Sunday's Aldeen Preview, an event that included all but one conference team, and was also listed second on the 2017 MWC Preseason Coaches Poll. This year's championships will start on Friday and continue on Saturday and Sunday.

After posting a 41-26 victory over visiting Macalester College last week, the football team is 4-0 and averaging 42 points and 518 yards per game. Lake Forest will host Knox College, which is also off to a good start at 3-1, for Homecoming on Saturday. The Foresters have won their last seven meetings with the Prairie Fire, including last year's 55-17 decision here at home.

Several other Foresters teams will also be competing this week, beginning with a men's soccer game on Farwell Field against Beloit College on Thursday. Lake Forest routed Lawrence University 5-0 on Sunday to improve to 6-4-1 overall and 3-0-0 in MWC play this season. The Buccaneers enter the week 3-7-0 overall with losses in each of their three conference games. Last year's 2-1 triumph at Beloit gave the Foresters a four-game winning streak against the Bucs. Lake Forest will also be in action on Sunday at rival St. Norbert College (8-3-1, 3-0-0 MWC) in a battle between two teams expected to contend for this year's MWC title.

Lake Forest and St. Norbert also appeared near the top of the preseason coaches poll in women's soccer and the two will meet in De Pere, Wisconsin, on Friday. The Foresters are coming off a convincing 7-0 victory over Lawrence University on Sunday and are 4-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the league. The Green Knights own a 7-4-0 overall record and are still perfect after three conference contests. St. Norbert took last year's meeting 2-1 in overtime.

The Forester volleyball team will also be on the road this weekend. Lake Forest opened its MWC schedule with a four-set win over visiting Knox College on Saturday and is now 8-9 overall this season. The team will play at Cornell College (14-5, 2-0 MWC) Friday night and Grinnell College (10-5, 0-2 MWC) Saturday afternoon. The Foresters have dropped their last eight matches against Cornell but have won three years in a row against Grinnell.

While the Lake Forest volleyball team has just begun conference play, the womens tennis team is set to complete its MWC schedule on the road this weekend. The Foresters defeated Illinois Institute of Technology and Aurora University on Sunday to improve to 11-1 overall this fall. The team is 5-1 is the MWC and will play at Knox College (5-8. 4-3 MWC) Saturday morning and at Monmouth College (3-11, 2-5 MWC) that afternoon. A Sunday afternoon contest at Illinois College (4-8. 1-6 MWC) will close out the dual match portion of the Foresters' fall season. Lake Forest is 49-2 all-time against Knox, Monmouth, and Illinois College combined.
