Lake Forest will induct basketball player Tim Bernero '87, swimmer Chelsea Bueter '07, football player Pat Dunne '03, and soccer player Brett Egner '97 into its hall of fame and honor Forester Impact Award recipient Bob Tiernan '49 at the College's Athletic Recognition Ceremony at Homecoming on Saturday, October 7. The ceremony will be held in the Mohr Student Center/Stuart Commons in Calvin Durand Hall at 10:00 a.m.
Bernero finished his four-year basketball career with 1,325 points, the sixth-highest total in team history at the time of his graduation. He was an Honorable Mention All-Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference selection as a sophomore and junior before earning first team honors his final season. As a senior he also captained the Foresters, was named the team's Most Valuable Player after averaging 20.3 points per game, and was the Nicholas J. Wasylik Senior Athletic Award winner. After several years as an assistant men's basketball coach at the collegiate level, he was named the head women's coach at Carthage College, where he has posted a 241-135 record over the last 14 years with two conference titles and three trips to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Bueter was the most successful female swimmer in the Midwest Conference during her four-year collegiate career. Her 11 titles in 12 individual events at the MWC Championships are tied for the most in program history and she also helped lead Forester relay teams to a pair of first-place finishes. Bueter was named MWC Swimmer of the Year three times and was also a three-time Academic All-MWC selection. She earned All-American honors in 2004 by placing eighth in the country in the 200-breaststroke and 11th in the 200-IM. She graduated with school and conference records in the 200-breaststroke (2:23.99) and 200-IM (2:10.01) and ranked second in team annals in two other events.
Dunne finished his collegiate football career with at least a share of 14 of the program's kicking and punting records, including the longest field goal in team history, a 50-yarder. Among his 30 career field goals were 14 during the Foresters' Midwest Conference championship season of 2002 and he averaged 37.8 yards per punt during his four years at the College. Dunne, a three-year team captain, was named all-conference three times as both a kicker and punter and continues to rank among the league's all-time leaders in several categories. He went on to a career in teaching and coaching and enters his 10th season as the head football coach at Marist High School, his alma mater, with a 71-31 career record.
Egner transferred to Lake Forest as a sophomore and finished his three years ranked among the top five in Forester men's soccer history with 29 career goals, 29 assists, and 87 points. The team was 32-9-2 overall and 27-3-0 in Midwest Conference North Division play during his career. As a senior Egner captained the squad to a perfect record in league play and the second of back-to-back conference titles. His 42 points and 17 goals that season ranked second in team history at the time and he also put his name among the program's single-season leaders in assists with 15 during the team's 17-1-0 season the year before.
Bob Tiernan is the fourth individual to receive the Forester impact Award, joining Karen Herman (2014), Spike Gummere (2015), and Paula Dau '58 (2016). He is a 1949 graduate of the College and during his undergraduate years was a member of the Forester football and men's basketball teams. He was also extremely active on campus, serving as Vice President of Phi Pi Epsilon and participating in Homecoming Committee, Intramural Sports, Stentor Committee, Forester Committee, and Economics Club. His love and care for the College has endured as he is a frequent visitor to campus, specifically during Homecoming. Over the years Bob's generosity toward the Lake Forest Athletic Department has been nothing short of incredible. His significant contributions have helped to preserve the Forester Tradition of Excellence through the creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame, The Tiernan Trophy Room, and The Dau Room. Bob has also been instrumental in numerous athletic department initiatives.
