Lake Forest College Faculty Athletic Representative Linda Horwitz has been selected as a 2017 NCAA Division III FAR Fellow.
Dr. Horwitz is an Associate Professor of Communication and Chair of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at the College. This year she will teach Introduction to Communication, Visual Rhetoric, Rhetorical Criticism, Rhetoric and Public Memory and a senior seminar on Chicago's two world fairs. Her current research is on rhetorical approaches to remembering the Holocaust, Civic Pedagogy, and the construction of cities. A former NCAA Division I alpine skier and international collegiate debater, Dr. Horwitz has served as Lake Forest's faculty athletic representative to the Midwest Conference or Northern Collegiate Hockey Association since 2004. She enjoys cheering on the Foresters when she is not playing for her recreational sports team, the Diesel Daisies.

"Her commitment to our coaches and student-athletes is unmatched. In addition to fulfilling her official duties as FAR, she is also a regular in the bleachers at home contests and a valuable resource for everyone involved with Forester Athletics."
The FAR Fellows Institute was launched in 2010 and aims to increase the effectiveness of Division III FARs at the campus, conference, and national levels.
Institute attendees will participate in a three-day professional development program at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis Friday, October 13 to Sunday, October 15. The components of the program provide a thorough examination of best practices and issues surrounding the role and responsibility of the FAR, help FAR Fellows develop the leadership skills necessary to carry out their responsibilities on campus and in their conference, and strengthen the network of FARs needed to serve on conference, divisional, and association-wide committees. The Institute will conclude with FAR Fellows committing to taking action on at least one idea. Highlights from 2016 included:
Campus
1. Attend new faculty orientation. Include a DIII orientation.
2. Meet with athletic teams.
3. Adopt a team/faculty member.
4. Develop a job description and send to president.
5. Speak to plenary faculty.
Conference
1. Meet or talk to the conference commissioner and AD group.
2. Communicate good ideas and best practices.
3. Attend conference meetings (prepare with bylaws, etc).
National
1. Attend NCAA Convention and/or FARA.
2. Read FARA Voice and the DIII Monthly Update and talk to AD.
3. Identify opportunities and submit self-nominations to serve on national committees.
