This Week in the Forest: February 13-19

This Week in the Forest: February 13-19

Fifteen Forester seniors in four sports will play in their final career regular season home game on Saturday.

Before honoring the seniors, however, the Forester basketball teams will play Tuesday night at St. Norbert College. The Lake Forest women at 5-16 overall and 4-12 in Midwest Conference play this season. They were defeated by St. Norbert (16-5, 13-3 MWC) at home last Wednesday and are coming off a loss to league-leading Cornell College on Saturday. It will be a match-up between two of the top three field goal percentage defenses in the conference.

The Forester men's basketball team is also looking to avenge last Wednesday's loss to the Green Knights and rebound after falling to Cornell on Saturday. Lake Forest is 12-9 overall and 10-6 in the MWC this season while St. Norbert sits atop the standings at 17-4 overall and 14-2 in the conference. The teams combined for just 111 points in last week's meeting between the top two scoring defenses in the league.

Conference titles will be on the line for a pair of Forester teams this weekend. The MWC Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by Grinnell College on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Lake Forest men are seeking their third championship in the last four seasons while the women are looking to improve on last year's fourth-place finish. Nine individual Foresters have claimed conference titles in 23 individual or relay events during their careers and are looking to add to that total this weekend.

The Lake Forest women's hockey team enters this weekend 20-2-1 overall and 14-1-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Foresters, ranked sixth in the nation, will host #2 Adrian College (21-2-0, 16-0-0 NCHA) on Friday and Saturday and need to defeat the Bulldogs twice to capture the third conference title in team history. Adrian leads the nation in scoring and is riding a 12-game winning streak. Lake Forest is the fourth-highest scoring team in the country and the Foresters' program record 16-game unbeaten streak is tied for the longest in the nation.

The Forester men's hockey team will play a home-and-home series with Lawrence University this weekend. Friday night's games will be played in Appleton, Wisconsin, and the teams will face off again 24 hours later in Lake Forest's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. At 14-9-0 overall and 10-8-0 in NCHA play, the Foresters are tied for third place in the NCHA South Division standings. They are one of four teams in the division separated by just three points in the standings and vying for one of the two remaining berths in the 2017 Harris Cup Playoffs. Lawrence (6-14-3, 5-10-3 NCHA) is still in contention for the third spot in the North Division.

The Lawrence basketball teams will also be arriving in Lake Forest on Saturday. The Forester women are hoping to close out the 2016-17 season with the program's 20th consecutive victory over the Vikings (2-19, 0-16 MWC). Lake Forest posted a 61-30 victory when the teams played at Lawrence in January.

The Forester men were also victorious at Lawrence earlier this season, pulling away late in the game for a 66-53 triumph. The Vikings begin the week 9-11 overall and tied with Lake Forest for third place in the league. While both squads could secure spots in the four-team MWC Tournament, it is also possible for Saturday's game to decide which team's season will continue past this weekend.

In addition to Lake Forest's hockey and basketball teams hosting regular season-ending games on Saturday, the Forester men's handball players will be in action at home in an invitational doubles event. It will be the last in a series of four invitationals in 2016-17 where alumni and other local players come to the College to take on the current Foresters.
