This Week in the Forest: February 6-12

This Week in the Forest: February 6-12

Four home basketball games highlight this week's Lake Forest College Athletics schedule.

The week will kick off on Wednesday with the basketball teams hosting St. Norbert College on Forester Community Night. The fun-filled evening will include a social in the Tiernan Trophy Room, performances from the College's spirit squads, and opponents at or near the top of the Midwest Conference standings.

The Forester women's basketball team enters the week 5-14 overall and 4-10 in the conference after falling at Ripon College on Saturday. St. Norbert is 14-5 overall and tied for second in the league with amark of 11-3 in MWC play. It will be the first of two meetings between the teams in a seven-day span.

After a 75-73 triumph at Ripon on Saturday, the Lake Forest men are 12-7 overall and 10-4 in the conference. St. Norbert is 16-3 on the year and sits atop the MWC standings with a league mark of 13-1. It will be a match-up of the two hottest teams in the conference as the Foresters and Green Knights are each 7-1 in their last eight games.

The basketball teams are back in the Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday taking on Cornell College. Things do not get any easier for the Forester women, who will face the first-place Rams (15-4, 13-1 MWC) looking to avenge a 61-47 loss on the road earlier this season. Lake Forest leads the all-time series with Cornell 11-5 but has dropped each of the last three meetings.

The Cornell men enter the week 8-11 overall and 6-8 in the league. Lake Forest dropped a two-point game to the Rams on the road earlier this season and are 13-17 against them in program history. With a pair of victories this week, the Foresters could clinch a spot in this year's four-team MWC Tournament.

The only other home event of the week is the handball team's Women's Invitational Singles event on Saturday. It is the third of four invitationals on the season, leaving next Saturday's men's doubles event as the series' finale. Last weekend the Foresters were extremely successful at the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis. Anthony Collado was the Men's Open Singles champion and also claimed the Open Doubles title with Leo Canales. Kyra Vidas was the Women's Open Singles runner-up and, along with Sophia Goss, the Open Doubles champion.

The Forester hockey teams will be on the road for the penultimate weekend of the regular season. The men, who defeated Aurora University 7-1 at home Saturday night and 1-0 on the road on Sunday, will travel across two state lines to Finlandia University. Lake Forest will enter contests on Friday and Saturday 12-9-0 overall and an even 8-8-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Finlandia is 0-23-0 overall and 0-18-0 in the NCHA. The Foresters have won their last eight meetings with the Lions and lead the all-times series 12-2-0.

The Lake Forest women will wait until Saturday to start their two-game series at Marian University. The Foresters moved up a spot to #5 in the national rankings after prevailing 2-1 and 2-0 at St. Norbert College last weekend. They wil take a 18-2-1 overall record and 12-1-1 mark in NCHA play into the series against the Sabres, who are 9-11-1 overall and 6-8-0 in the league. Lake Forest hosted and defeated Marian 4-3 on November 8 and own a 17-0-1 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs.

The Forester men's tennis team will continue its young season at the Premier Tennis and Fitness Club on Sunday. Lake Forest won its home opener against Illinois Wesleyan University 8-1 on Saturday to improve to 2-1 this year. Sunday's opponents will be Edgewood College (0-3) and Carthage College (1-2).
