This Week in Forester Athletics: Jan. 2-8

After posting 159 victories and a .569 winning percentage in 2016, Forester teams will begin the new year by resuming conference play in basketball and men's hockey. The women's hockey team is headed to Minnesota and the swimmers to southern California.

California is where the Forester men's basketball team competed last Thursday and Friday. Lake Forest defeated Luther College 66-51 and host California Lutheran University 90-86 to win the Thrivent Financial Tournament title and improve to 4-5 on the season. The team will put its 2-2 Midwest Conference record on the line Wednesday night at Monmouth College. Monmouth is also 2-2 in the league and has an overall record of 2-7. The Foresters are 42-28 all-time against the Fighting Scots. The teams split the 2015-16 season series with the home team coming out on top in each contest.

The Forester women's basketball team also traveled last week, competing in the high-level Arizona Shootout, where they were defeated 63-50 by Kenyon College and 73-70 in overtime by Williams College. Monmouth will host the Lake Forest women on Wednesday in a battle between a pair of teams with 1-3 records in conference play. The Foresters own a 33-12 record in the all-time series between the programs and have won the last three meetings.

The Lake Forest hockey teams have also been idle since December 3. The Forester men will resume Nothern Collegiate Hockey Association play with a home-and-home series against Milwaukee School of Engineering this weekend. The teams will face off in Milwaukee Friday night and in Lake Forest on Saturday. The Foresters will enter the weekend 8-5-0 overall and 4-4-0 in NCHA play. MSOE is 4-4-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the league. The teams have split the last two season series with the team playing at home winning each contest. The Raiders own a 27-19-3 advantage in the all-time series.

Ranked seventh in the nation by USCHO.com, the Forester women's hockey team will travel to Mankato, Minnesota, this weekend for a non-conference series at Saint Mary's University. Lake Forest is 10-2-0 this season and 15-2-5 all-time against the Cardinals. Saint Mary's is 4-6-1 so far this year.

The College's swimming and diving teams have not competed since the men placed third and with women fourth at the A3 Carthage Classic December 2-3. The Foresters will spend the week in southern California, where they will train and take on Soka University in a non-scored dual meet on Saturday.

The Forester basketball teams will continue league play against Ripon College at home Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawk women enter the week 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the MWC while the men are 8-1 overall and undefeated in four conference games.
