This Week in Forester Athletics: November 14-20

The start of the basketball and handball seasons, five home hockey games, and the first swimming and diving invitational of the year are coming up this week.

The basketball teams tip off the 2016-17 season at home Tuesday evening, beginning with the women's game against Benedictine University at 5:00. The Foresters have won 11 of 20 meetings with the Eagles, including the last eight, but the team's have not played each other since 1998. Lake Forest is coming off an 11-12 season in 2015-16 while Benedictine finished 16-11.

The men's basketball team will open the season against Coe College Tuesday night at 7:00. The Foresters posted a 12-11 record last season while the Kohawks were 10-15. Coe owns a 12-7 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs but Lake Forest came back from a 17-point deficit to win 81-76 when they met in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, last December.

The men's hockey team will also be in action Tuesday night when it travels to Aurora for a non-conference game at 8:05 p.m. The Foresters are coming off a pair of losses at the College of St. Scholastica last weekend and are currently 3-3-0 this season. Aurora dropped a pair of close games at St. Norbert College over the weekend and are now 2-4-0 on the year. Lake Forest won two of three meetings with the Spartans last season, Aurora's first as a varsity program.

Lake Forest College will host the 2016 Joe Ardito Contenders Handball Tournament on Friday and Saturday. As a sophomore last year Leo Canales became the fourth Forester in as many seasons to take the title at the season-opening event. As former champions he and senior Anthony Collado will be cheering on several teammates contending for this year's crown.

Lake Forest will also be hosting five hockey games over the weekend, beginning with the women against St. Norbert College Friday at 4:00 p.m. The Foresters, ranked eighth in the nation, split a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games last weekend, prevailing 7-1 at Finlandia University on Friday before falling 3-0 at #4 Adrian College on Sunday. The team is now 5-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in league play on the year. St. Norbert is 0-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play. The Foresters will also host Northland College (1-5-0) in non-conference games Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Recent Lake Forest graduate Michelle Greeneway will be presented with the 2016 Laura Hurd Trophy, given to the NCAA Division III Player of the Year, between the first two periods of Saturday's contest.

The Forester men will be back out on the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse ice Friday night at 7:30 against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (1-5-1). The team will also host take on visiting University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (3-1-2), the 15th-ranked team in the nation, Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Lake Forest will also host the University of Chicago in men's basketball Saturday afternoon at 3:00. The Maroons took last year's meeting 67-61 in Chicago and went on to post a 17-8 record on the season. Saturday's contest will be the 77th game between the two programs.

The Forester women's basketball team will travel to Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. contest. Lake Forest hosted and defeated the raiders 73-68 in overtime last year and are 7-2 all-time against M.S.O.E.

The Forester men's and women's swimming and diving teams won every event and swept visiting Ripon College in dual meet on Saturday. The men are now 2-1 on the season and the women 1-2. Lake Forest will travel to the University of Chicago for the Phoenix Fall Classic on Saturday and Sunday. The first event on both days will begin at 10:00 a.m.
