This Week in Forester Athletics: October 24-30

The fall and winter seasons begin overlapping this weekend as eight Forester teams will be in action, highlighted by four teams celebrating Senior Days.

The men's soccer team will kick off the week against visiting Illinois Institute of Technology Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Foresters blanked Illinois College 3-0 at home on Sunday and junior John Cappuccitti was named Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week after assisting on one goal and scoring two in the contest. Lake Forest enters the week 9-7-0 overall and 7-1-0 in leauge play. Illinois Tech (7-8-1) will be the Foresters' final non-conference opponent of the regular season. Lake Forest will be back out on Farwell Field Sunday at noon in the regular season finale and Senior Day game against Ripon College (4-11-0, 0-7-0 MWC). A victory, coupled with a Knox College loss or tie against St. Norbert College on Saturday, would clinch the Foresters's third MWC title in the last five years and 17th overall.

The first Senior Day festivities of the week will be Tuesday night in the Sports and Recreation Center, where the Lake Forest volleyball team (6-15, 2-6 MWC), which won in five sets at Illinois College before falling in five at Monmouth College last weekend, will host Beloit College (9-13, 0-7 MWC). After completing their league schedule against Beloit, the Foresters will travel to Benedictine University for Saturday's Eagle Classic and close out the season against Aurora University at 10:00 a.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran College at 2:00 p.m.

The men's hockey team will begin its 2016-17 season with Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games against Concordia University Wisconsin. The rivals will face off in Mequon, Wisconsin, Friday night at 7:00 and in Lake Forest at the same time on Saturday with the series winner claiming the Border Cup. The Foresters claimed the trophy the first two years of the Border Battle but finished one point behind the Falcons in the 2015-16 NCHA standings.

The Lake Forest cross country team will travel to Beloit this weekend for Saturday's MWC Championship Meet. The Forester men and women combined for a league-high seven All-MWC honorees at last year's championships, where they finished third and fifth, respectively, in the team standings for the second straight season. Saturday's men's 8K race will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the women's 6K will follow at noon.

The Lake Forest swimming and diving teams will open their 2016-17 season at noon on Saturday at Carthage College. The teams will be competing in an early-season dual meet for the 21st year in a row.

Senior Day for the Forester football team will be on Saturday and Lake Forest will put its 8-2 overall record and 4-2 mark in MWC play on the line against visiting Knox College (1-6, 1-4 MWC) at 1:00 p.m. Forester seniors Joey Valdivia and Alex Pasiewicz were named MWC Offensive and Special Teams Performers of the Week, respectively, on Monday after combining for nearly 400 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the team's 34-27 triumph over Lawrence University last Saturday. Lake Forest has won the last six meetings with the Prairie Fire, including a 34-3 decision at home in 2015.

The Forester women's hockey team will begin its season on Saturday as the eighth-ranked team in the nation, according to this week's USCHO.com poll. Lake Forest will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota, and take on St. Catherine University at Drake Arena (St. Paul Academy). Saturday night's season opener is scheduled for 7:00 and the teams will face off again at 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

After the men's soccer team closes out the regular season against Ripon on Sunday, the women's team will do the same in its Senior Day game at 2:30 p.m. Lake Forest hosted and defeated Illinois College 4-0 on Sunday to improve to 9-7-1 overall and 5-2-1 in MWC play. Ripon enters the week 13-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the league with another conference game to play on Wednesday. The winner of Sunday's contest will advance to the four-team MWC Tournament while, depending on action elsewhere in the conference, the loser may be eliminated.
