This Week in Forester Athletics: October 3-9

This Week in Forester Athletics: October 3-9

Homecoming and several crucial conference contests highlight the schedule for the week.

The Forester men's soccer team will kick things off on Wednesday against visiting St. Norbert College. The teams enter the week atop the Midwest Conference standings with identical 4-0-0 records in league play. The Green Knights edged out Lake Forest in the 2015 regular season finale to claim the conference title but the Foresters got past them at St. Norbert less than a week later en route to claiming the MWC Tournament title. Wednesday's game, which could decide this year's championship, will begin at 4:00 p.m.

The first MWC title of 2016-17 will be handed out to the league's women's golf team with the best score this weekend. The three-day MWC Championship Tournament will begin on Friday and continue on Saturday and Sunday. After finishing fifth as a team in their inaugural season of 2014, the Foresters moved up a spot in the standings last year and are looking to continue their climb toward the top in 2016.

After a weekend off from competition, the Lake Forest cross country teams will be back out on the course on Friday at the Benedictine Eagle Invitational. The meet will be held at St. James Farm in Warrenville, Illinois, and will begin at 4:00 p.m. The history of the program will also be celebrated on Saturday as cross country will be the featured sport in this year's athletic reunion.

The Forester volleyball team will begin an important weekend of conference matches on Friday when the College plays host to four-time defending league champion Cornell College. The match will begin at 7:00. Lake Forest will also host Grinnell College Saturday afternoon at 1:00.

The Lake Forest women's tennis team is currently 3-3 in the league and will close out the conference schedule with three matches at home this weekend. On Saturday the Foresters will take on Illinois College at 9:00 a.m. and Monmouth College at 3:00 p.m. The team's conference finale on Sunday will be against Knox College and will begin at 2:00 p.m. Victories in all three matches would likely clinch a spot for the Foresters in the four-team MWC Tournament in the spring.

This year's Homecoming football game features the 3-2 Foresters against Ripon College, which enters the weekend at 1-4. Both teams are 1-2 in MWC play. The team playing at home has won each of the last four meeting between the two teams and Lake Forest will be looking to extend that streak to five. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Several traditional Homecoming events will also occur on Saturday, beginning with the Athletic Recognition Ceremony at 10:00. Football player David Bleitner '05, soccer player Melissa (Stevenson) Chik '06, basketball player Katie McCants '03, and triathlete Joe Zemaitis '02 will be inducted into the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame and Paula Dau '58 will receive the Forester Impact Award. All five individuals will be featured in the Homecoming Parade and honored on the field during the football game.
